When rekeying is the right choice
- You have just moved in and do not know who holds a key.
- A key has been lost, stolen or not returned.
- You want several existing locks to accept a single key.
- The hardware is in good condition and suits the door.
When replacement makes more sense
If a cylinder is worn, corroded, or of a type that no longer has parts available, rekeying is a short-term patch. We will say so and quote both options so you can choose knowingly.
Designing a master key system
A master system is planned on paper first: doors listed, groups defined, then key levels assigned. Done properly it is simple to administer for years. Done as an afterthought it becomes unmanageable and insecure.
We supply a written key schedule with every system so you know exactly which key opens which door.
Questions we are asked
- Does rekeying weaken the lock?
- No. It replaces the pin stack inside the cylinder with a new combination. The lock's security rating is unchanged.
- Can every lock be keyed alike?
- Only locks sharing a compatible keyway. We check your hardware first and tell you which doors would need a new cylinder.
